Calls for stronger gun control laws flooded social media for the second time in one week after 20 people were killed and at least 26 others injured in a mass shooting near a Walmart and the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas on Saturday.
Authorities responded to an active shooter alert at around 10 a.m. local time, El Paso Police Sgt. Robert Gomez said at a news conference on Saturday, after a gunman reportedly opened fire inside a Walmart this morning, causing multiple fatalities.
El Paso Mayor Dee Margo tweeted a police statement confirming "several fatalities and multiple suspects in custody" earlier today. During the news conference, Gomez said one white male in his 20s had been taken into police custody. The suspect was arrested without incident. It is currently unclear whether the shooting involved multiple shooters.
The mass shooting comes less than a week after another gunman opened fire on festival goers at the Gilroy Garlic Festival last Sunday night in California. Hours after the shooting, which left three dead and at least 15 others injured, tens of thousands of people began tweeting under the hashtag #GunControlNow to call on U.S. leaders to implement tighter gun control measures in order to keep Americans safe.
Following the El Paso shooting earlier today, the hashtag began trending again on Saturday afternoon, with tens of thousands of Americans either criticizing the country's lack of effective gun control measures or demanding lawmakers respond to the incident by enacting legislation.
