BERNIE SANDERS WINS OVER PETE BUTTIGIEG IN NEW HAMPSHIRE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY, NEWSWEEK PROJECTS
Bernie Sanders has won in the New Hampshire Democratic 2020 primary over former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, according to a Newsweek projection, a victory that will give the Vermont senator momentum as he heads for tougher states further south.
With more than 87 percent of precincts reporting in New Hampshire, Sanders lead with 26 percent of the vote to Buttigieg's 24.4 percent. His win is likely to be within a margin of 4,300, or under 2 percentage points over his moderate 2020 rival.
Senator Amy Klobuchar trailed behind in third with 19.8, Senator Elizabeth Warren came in fourth with 9.3 percent and former Vice President Joe Biden followed in fifth with 8.4 percent. In the delegates metric, Sanders and Buttigieg tied with nine each, while Klobuchar garnered six.
Sanders took the stage at his victory party and expressed gratitude to the volunteers of his grassroots campaign. "Let me take this opportunity to thank the people of New Hampshire for a great victory tonight," he said. "The reason that we won tonight, we won last week in Iowa, is because of the hard work of so many volunteers."
"This victory here is the beginning of the end for Donald Trump," Sanders continued. "We're going to Nevada, we're going to South Carolina and we're going to win those states as well."
Some voters in the state said Sanders' win was expected, given recent polling data and his easy 2016 win against Hillary Clinton. New Hampshire also neighbors the progressive candidate's home state of Vermont.
Although his victory was predicted, Sanders' supporters were on edge as the results trickled in and Buttigieg began narrowing in on the senator's early lead. Their fears stemmed from Buttigieg's narrow one-tenth-of-one-percentage-point victory over Sanders in the metric of delegates to the state convention in Iowa.
While speaking to his supporters in Nashua, New Hampshire, Buttigieg revisited his high school admiration for Sanders. "I admired Sen. Sanders when I was a high school student. I respect him greatly to this day, and I congratulate him on his strong showing tonight," he said.

The Iowa state's results came in last week after days of delays due to disastrous meltdowns with the Iowa Democratic Party's (IDP) reporting system. Sanders lead the popular vote in the state by 2,500 votes. Both candidates declared themselves victorious in the state based on the figures.
As the New Hampshire primary polls closed, former entrepreneur Andrew Yang and Colorado Senator Michael Bennet formally suspended their 2020 campaigns.
Since launching his presidential campaign in November 2017, Yang managed to transform himself from a completely anonymous outside candidate to a rising competitor in the crowded field. His decision to drop out comes after a disappointing show in the Iowa caucuses and early New Hampshire primary results. Yang, who has not decided whether he will endorse a fellow Democratic candidate, indicated earlier this month that his base has the most crossover with Sanders' campaign.
Bennet, who joined the race last May, ended his bid for the presidency after struggling for months to get his campaign off the ground. Although he secured a spot for two Democratic debates, in June and July 2019, he failed to qualify for subsequent debates and eventually had his campaign overshadowed by the many other senators on stage.
