Hours after his Christmas message called for "understanding and respect," President Donald Trump tweeted disparaging remarks directed at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
In his presidential Christmas message on Wednesday, Trump called for unity among Americans. While the challenges that face our country are great, the bonds that unite us as Americans are much stronger," the president said. "Together, we must strive to foster a culture of deeper understanding and respect—traits that exemplify the teachings of Christ."
Trump also paid tribute to the Armed Forces and wished Americans a merry Christmas and happy New Year.
Just hours after his call for unity, however, Trump attacked Pelosi on Twitter, calling her "crazy." He also continued to claim that his impeachment was not fair.
"Why should Crazy Nancy Pelosi, just because she has a slight majority in the House, be allowed to Impeach the President of the United States?" he wrote. Trump's tweet also referenced his call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, where the president allegedly offered a quid pro quo and threatened to withhold military aid until the Ukrainian leader investigated former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Trump has repeatedly denied there was a quid pro quo. "Got ZERO Republican votes, there was no crime, the call with Ukraine was perfect, with 'no pressure,'" he wrote.
Trump also referenced a March Washington Post interview with Pelosi where the speaker said she didn't favor impeachment, unless there was something "so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan" to impeach the president. "She said it must be 'bipartisan & overwhelming,' but this Scam Impeachment was neither," he wrote. "Also, very unfair with no Due Process, proper representation, or witnesses."
The president accused Pelosi of hypocrisy, despite his earlier calls for unity and understanding. "Now Pelosi is demanding everything the Republicans weren't allowed to have in the House," he tweeted. "Dems want to run majority Republican Senate. Hypocrites!"
The White House, Trump Campaign, and Pelosi's office did not immediately respond to Newsweek's requests for comment.
Trump tweeted more attacks at Pelosi and California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday. "Nancy Pelosi's District in California has rapidly become one of the worst anywhere in the U.S. when it come to the homeless & crime," he wrote. "It has gotten so bad, so fast - she has lost total control and, along with her equally incompetent governor, Gavin Newsom, it is a very sad sight!" In another tweet, he suggested Pelosi "should clean up her filthy dirty District & help the homeless there."
