TRUMP IS 'LYING' ABOUT THE IG REPORT, FORMER FBI ASSISTANT DIRECTOR CLAIMS: 'THE PRESIDENT HASN'T READ IT'
A former assistant director of the FBI accused President Donald Trump of mischaracterizing Inspector General Michael Horowitz's report into the Crossfire Hurricane investigation and "lying about it."
The IG report found no evidence that the investigation, which focused on individuals connected to the Trump campaign amid suspicions of Russian interference in the 2016 election, was tainted with political bias by those overseeing or conducting it.
However, the IG report did criticize the FBI for its handling of four FISA applications to place Carter Page, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign with links to Russian intelligence officers, under surveillance.
Those four applications contained 17 "significant inaccuracies and omissions," the IG report said, that if properly conveyed to the court weakened the case to place Page under surveillance. Page was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing relating to Russia's election meddling.
"They fabricated evidence and they lied to the courts and they did all sorts of things to have it go their way. This was something that we can never allow to happen again," Trump said in the White House after he was "just briefed" on the IG report.
"The report actually, and especially when you look into it and the details of the report, are far worse than anything I would have even imagined...This was an overthrow of government, this was an attempted overthrow and a lot of people were in on it and they got caught. They got caught red-handed."
Frank Figliuzzi, a former assistant director for counterintelligence at the FBI, who worked under Robert Mueller at the bureau, took issue with Trump's comments about the IG report and its conclusions.
"We are officially living in an alternate reality with what the president has just said characterizing the IG report. I've got the IG report in my hand. We're reading it. I can assure you the president hasn't read it and is lying about it," Figliuzzi said on MSNBC.
Figliuzzi highlighted as an example the exculpation of Lisa Page, a lawyer for the FBI that Trump has targeted. Texts between Page and Peter Strzok, a deputy assistant director at the FBI who later worked on the Mueller investigation, contained disparaging remarks about Trump.
The FBI released the messages between the pair—who were having an affair—to the House Judiciary Committee, which was scrutinizing the Mueller probe. Strzok was removed from the Mueller investigation as a consequence of the messages and later fired from the FBI.
Trump has repeatedly accused Page of involvement in a politically-motivated conspiracy at the FBI to open the Russia investigation. Not only did the IG report find no evidence of political bias in the investigation, it also said Page had almost nothing to do with it.
"While Lisa Page attended some of the discussions regarding the opening of the investigations, she did not play a role in the decision to open Crossfire Hurricane or the four individual cases," the report said.
"We further found that while Strzok was directly involved in the decisions to open Crossfire Hurricane and the four individual cases, he was not the sole, or even the highest-level, decision-maker as to any of those matters."
"We've heard now for years how awful Lisa Page is, the FBI attorney who texted with Pete Stzrok her dislike of Trump and many other people," Figliuzzi told MSNBC.
"Guess what? The IG report says Lisa Page had absolutely zero to do with any of the openings of any of the investigations including Crossfire Hurricane. It's an irrelevant topic. Yet we'll never hear that coming from the White House."
The White House did not respond immediately to Newsweek's request for comment.
