RUDY GIULIANI SLAMS GOP COUNSEL IN TRUMP IMPEACHMENT HEARING FOR 'PICKING UP DEMOCRAT LIES' ABOUT HIS WORK IN UKRAINE
Rudy Giuliani railed on Wednesday against the counsel representing House Republicans during the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, claiming that the attorney is "picking up Democrat lies" about his work in Ukraine.
"Republican lawyer doesn't do his own research and preparation, and is instead picking up Democrat lies, shame," Giuliani tweeted during the public testimony of U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland in the House.
The former New York City mayor added: "Allow me to inform him: I have NO financial interests in Ukraine, NONE! I would appreciate his apology."
Giuliani, Trump's personal attorney, is a central figure in the Ukraine controversy and was at the heart of Wednesday's impeachment hearing by the House Intelligence Committee. He has been open about his efforts to seek damaging information on Trump's political rivals and has asserted that State Department officials were aware of what he was doing.
Sondland began his testimony by stating that he and other officials were forced to work with Giuliani on the Ukraine agenda at Trump's "express direction."
"We did not want to work with Mr. Giuliani. Simply put, we played the hand we were dealt," Sondland told lawmakers.
The ambassador later added: "Mr. Giuliani's requests were a quid pro quo for arranging a White House visit" for Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. "Mr. Giuliani demanded that Ukraine make a public statement announcing investigations of the 2016 election/DNC server and Burisma," he added, referring to the Ukrainian energy company whose board once included Joe Biden's son Hunter.
Giuliani lashed out at both Sondland and the GOP counsel, Steve Castor, in a series of tweets on Wednesday.
"Sondland is speculating based on VERY little contact. I never met him and had very few calls with him, mostly with Volker. Volker testified I answered their questions and described them as my opinions, NOT demands. I.E., no quid pro quo!" Giuliani wrote. (Kurt Volker is a former special envoy to Ukraine.)
During the hearing, Republicans appeared to try to distance Giuliani's conduct regarding Ukraine from Trump. In one line of questioning, Castor pressed Sondland about Giuliani's personal "business interests" in Ukraine. Castor also mentioned two Giuliani associates, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, who were recently indicted on charges that they illegally funneled foreign money to U.S. political candidates.
"If I had known of all of Mr. Giuliani's dealings or of his associations with individuals now under criminal indictment, I would not have acquiesced to his participation," Sondland told the House committee.
Giuliani is also reportedly under investigation by federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York. According to a report published by The New York Times last month, federal prosecutors are looking into whether his involvement with Ukraine violated federal lobbying laws.
Rudy Giuliani speaks to the Organization of Iranian American Communities during their march outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on September 24. Giuliani is at the center of the House Democrats' ongoing impeachment probe against President Donald Trump.
