MALIBU FIRE 2019 UPDATE: FIREFIGHTERS SAY 40 ACRES BURNED
A California fire that began late Friday morning in Malibu has burned approximately 40 acres and is about 60 percent contained as of 3 p.m. PT. Any fires in this region have residents on edge after they endured a devastating 97,000-acre fire just last November.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department said the fire on Friday began at 11:25 a.m. local time along Sweetwater Canyon Road, and the latest development indicated firefighters were battling a brush fire near the Pacific Coast Highway.
The fire department said it does not know the cause of the fire, according to KTLA 5 in Los Angeles. The fire department tweeted Friday afternoon that the fire's progress had been stopped.
The winds had been blowing lightly at about 10 mph, which helped firefighters get the blaze under control, according to the Los Angeles Times.
CBS Los Angeles reported that there had been no reported injuries or damaged homes, and that there had been no evacuations ordered.
The fire had apparently worked its way uphill through a steep, rocky terrain.
The L.A. County Fire Department tweeted Friday that air tankers and four helicopters were on the scene, and an hour later they wrote that the fire was at 60 percent containment.
"The conditions are actually quite favorable...with the winds right now they don't seem to be making too much of an impact on this fire so everything seems to be under control," said L.A. County Fire Inspector Sky Cornell, who added that the fire most likely could be kept under 25 acres of coverage by his crews.
Along with 200 firefighters on the ground, there was assistance from the air with four water-dropping helicopters and fixed-wing air tankers that could drop fire retardant from above.
Officials said the area was prime for fire conditions through the weekend with dry, hot temperatures on the forecast. Sunday is forecast to be the hottest day.
The area is still recovering from a massive 97,000-acre blaze last November from the Woolsey fire, the largest to ever hit the Santa Monica Mountains recreation area. That fire resulted in three deaths and more than 1,500 structures that got destroyed.
