Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci on Sunday compared President Donald Trump to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and said the Republican Party may need to find a new candidate to replace him for 2020.
Scaramucci, who served as Trump's communications director for 11 days in 2017, compared the president's performance in the White House to the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe in a phone interview with Axios on Sunday afternoon.
"We are now in the early episodes of 'Chernobyl' on HBO, where the reactor is melting down and the apparatchiks are trying to figure out whether to cover it up or start the clean-up process," the American financier and political consultant said. "A couple more weeks like this and 'country over party' is going to require the Republicans to replace the top of the ticket in 2020."
If the president "doesn't reform his behavior, it will not just be me, but many others will be considering helping to find a replacement in 2020," Scaramucci continued.
"Right now, it's an unspeakable thing. But if he keeps it up, it will no longer be unspeakable," he added, referring to Trump's controversies. "The minute they start speaking of it, it will circulate and be socialized. We can't afford a full nuclear contamination site post 2020."
Scaramucci's comments come after Trump attacked him on Twitter for criticizing his presidency during television appearances.
"Anthony Scaramucci, who was quickly terminated (11 days) from a position that he was totally incapable of handling, now seems to do nothing but television as the all time expert on 'President Trump,'" the president tweeted over the weekend. "Like many other so-called television experts, he knows very little about me other than the fact that this Administration has probably done more than any other Administration in its first 2 1/2 years of existence."
"Anthony, who would do anything to come back in, should remember the only reason he is on TV, and it's not for being the Mooch!" Trump concluded.
Last week, Scaramucci condemned the president's visit to El Paso after the mass shooting, calling the trip a "catastrophe." "So, look, the president didn't do well on the trip," the ex-White House communications director said on MSNBC's Hardball on Thursday. "He probably would be mad at somebody for saying that."
"Maybe he'll tweet something negative about somebody for saying he didn't do well, but the facts are he did not do well on the trip," Scaramucci added.
In response to Scaramucci's Sunday remarks, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham simply pointed to Trump's tweets. "It sounds like [Scaramucci's] feelings are hurt," she said.
