These States Received the Most Stimulus Check Payouts—Utah, Alaska Among Highest Average Per Person
The Internal Revenue Service published its latest data regarding coronavirus stimulus payments Friday, with state-by-state breakdowns of the federal government payout showing California, Florida and Texas received the most overall money.
IRS and U.S. Treasury Department data shows the federal agencies have distributed $257.9 billion in Economic Impact Payments to Americans, also referred to as stimulus payments. The average payment came in at $1,809, with the states of Utah, Idaho and Alaska recording the highest median payouts per person or per couple. Since May 8, the IRS sent stimulus checks to 24.5 million individuals. The first payments were issued on April 24.
Forty-three states received at least one billion dollars in total payouts as part of the coronavirus relief stimulus payments. Individuals who made less than $75,000 in annual income were eligible to receive up to $1,200, while married couples who filed their federal taxes jointly could receive up to $2,400. Households were also eligible to receive $500 per child under the age of 17.
California received the most money in terms of total cash paid out, with about $27.8 billion being sent to nearly 16.9 million individuals across the state. Texas, which was in the upper tier of average payouts per person, received the second-most money overall, with $21.6 billion being distributed among 12.3 million residents. Florida received the third most amount of overall federal government money, with $17.5 billion sent to about 10.6 million residents.
New York, by far the hardest-hit state during the coronavirus pandemic, had one of the country's lowest average payouts per individual. Just over $15 billion was distributed among 9.3 million residents.
The District of Columbia has received the lowest amount of EIP payments, with $421 million being paid out to 308,306 residents of the nation's capital.
Taxpayers and eligible recipients elected to have the money either direct deposited into their bank accounts or sent by mail. The IRS is continuing to urge Americans who don't receive federal benefits or who didn't have a 2018 or 2019 obligation to file taxes to visit their website in order to register using their Non-Filer tool.
The IRS extended the tax deadline again over the past week, pushing the calendar back to July 15 for those who have not filed their 2019 federal income taxes.
"Economic Impact Payments have continued going out at a rapid rate to Americans across the country," wrote IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig in the agency's third of three stimulus payment updates. "We remind people to visit IRS.gov for the latest information, including answers to the most common questions we see surrounding the payments. We also continue to urge those who don't normally have a filing requirement, including those with little or no income, that they can quickly register for the payments on IRS.gov."
In addition to the individual payments to eligible Americans, the federal government has also set aside several billions of dollars for small businesses through guaranteed loans and other temporary relief programs.
Stimulus checks in Utah, Idaho and Alaska were the highest on average per individual but California, Texas and Florida received the most in IRS Economic Impact Payments overall.
