BERNIE SANDERS AND JOE BIDEN GAIN AS ELIZABETH WARREN COLLAPSES AMONG DEMOCRATIC-LEANING VOTERS: POLL
The number of potential Democratic voters who say they would prefer Senator Elizabeth Warren to win the 2020 candidacy has fallen significantly, with Joe Biden and Senator Bernie Sanders remaining the two frontrunners, according to a poll.
Ahead of Iowa's precinct caucuses, a Washington Post-ABC News national poll found that 12 percent of Democratic-leaning registered voters would back Warren in their state's primary or caucus, down from 23 percent in October.
The Massachusetts Democrat has lost support among women aged 18 to 49, sliding sharply from 27 percent to 12 percent, The Washington Post reported.
The poll also revealed an increase in support for Sanders in the past few months, with 23 percent of Democratic-leaning registered voters backing the Vermont independent compared to 17 percent in the October survey.
Biden, the former vice-president, maintains his leadamong the candidates at 32 percent support among Democratic-leaning registered voters, up from 28 percent before and a nine-point advantage over second-place Sanders.
The veteran Democrat also leads on the question of who registered voters rate as having the best chance of beating President Donald Trump at the 2020 election.
Biden was at 42 percent on the best candidate to defeat Trump. Next was Sanders at 17 percent then Warren at 11 percent.
Warren does lead on who is Democratic-leaning registered voters' second-choice candidate, with 23 percent naming her as their next-favorite compared to Sanders at 19 percent and Biden at 18 percent.
She remains the only 2020 candidate outside of Biden and Sanders to hold double-digit support as the first-choice candidate of registered voters.
Late-entrant Mike Bloomberg, the media and financial data billionaire went straight into fourth place at 8 percent among Democratic-leaning registered voters, having not been a candidate when the last poll was conducted.
The poll contained a random sample of 1,004 adults, including 880 registered voters, and was conducted by telephone between January 20-23. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.
Among all the poll's respondents, Trump's net approval rating had risen to 44 percent despite his impeachment. In October, Trump's net approval was 38 percent.
Trump is currently facing trial in the Senate after the House impeached him in December.
The president is accused of abusing his power and obstructing Congress over an alleged scheme to coerce Ukraine's government into interfering in the 2020 election to benefit his campaign. Trump denies any wrongdoing.
According to the RealClearPolitics national polling average, Biden is leading the Democratic party's 2020 race at 29.5 percent support. Sanders is second at 22.6 percent and Warren third at 14.5 percent.
