TRUMP HAS BUILT NEARLY 100 MILES OF BORDER WALL BY END OF 2019, WITH 350 MILES TO GO IN 2020
When President Donald Trump first launched his 2016 election campaign, he promised to rebuild America, starting with the construction of a "beautiful" border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.
In the years since, the "wall" as it has come to be known, has become a symbol of Trump's presidency itself, with the president pinning much of his legacy on its successful completion.
Over the course of the year, the president has vowed to see at least 450 miles of the border barrier completed before the end of 2020. If he succeeds in doing so, it will be a major victory for his administration. If he does not, however, it will be a humiliating defeat, regardless of the outcome of the 2020 election.
Whether Trump can meet his goal remains to be seen. However, as 2019 comes to a close, the president has so far only managed to build just under 100 miles of his promised border barriers.
In a border wall status report provided to Newsweek, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency said that as of December 27th, the Trump administration had overseen the construction of 98 miles of "new border wall system."
Those 98 miles have all been constructed "in place of dilapidated and outdated designs," however, so as Democrats have been quick to point out, the Trump administration technically speaking has yet to build a single mile of brand new border wall.
CBP has said that construction on brand new barriers is currently underway. However, crews will still need to see a total of 352 miles built before the end of 2020 if Trump wants to make good on his long-held promise.
In a statement sent to Newsweek, Trump campaign team deputy press secretary Daniel Bucheli, said that "when it comes to making our country safer, securing our border, enforcing our laws and helping stop illegal immigration, President Trump has kept his promises."
Bucheli said the president would continue to keep his promises as well "after he is re-elected in 2020."
The Trump campaign team said that it was still confident that the president would reach his goal of overseeing the construction of 450 miles of border barrier before 2020's end.
It added, there are already 140 miles currently under construction, with plans for further development to get underway in the year ahead.
Despite the Trump campaign's confidence, however, even CBP's current leadership has expressed doubt that the administration will be able to meet its ambitious goal.
"Our goal at the end of 2020 was 450 miles," Mark Morgan, the acting commissioner for the agency recently told reporters.
"It's hard right now to be able to say whether we're still going to be able to meet that goal, but I'm confident that we're going to be close," he said.
With November's election coming up just before the deadline, voters will have a more clear idea on whether Trump's border wall will be a feat or failure before they head to the polls. Whether that revelation will have any impact on the president's chances of re-election, only time will tell.
