Iran live updates: Tehran waiting for US response to 7-point proposal, Araghchi says
President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.
Delegations from the U.S. and Iran entered negotiations in June aimed at a war-ending deal based on a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries.
Those talks broke down as the U.S. and Iran continued to exchange strikes, with the strategic Strait of Hormuz as the primary flashpoint. Trump then said in August that the U.S. would launch a "crushing economic operation" to force Tehran into submission.
Trump says war will be over 'very soon,' but offers no details
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the war with Iran would be “over with very soon," but did not offer any details.
“Iran will not have a nuclear weapon. And they're failing very badly, very badly. That'll be over with very soon. It'll be over with very, very soon,” Trump said.
“They will not have a nuclear weapon. And oil prices are going to be tumbling down, just like they were before I had to make that little excursion to the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump said.
Trump’s remarks come after he rejected a ceasefire proposal from Iran over the weekend, telling reporters “that deal would not be acceptable.”
“'I’m rejecting their deal. They want to make a deal where we open the Strait immediately because they're losing so badly,” Trump said.
“We're winning tremendously -- we have total control of the Hormuz Strait,” he said on Saturday.
Qatar continues mediation efforts between US, Iran
Qatar is continuing its role as a mediator between Iran and the U.S., Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Dr. Majid bin Mohammed Al-Ansari said Tuesday.
"The State of Qatar continues its meetings and exchange of messages between the parties to build common ground that brings viewpoints closer and leads to a peaceful solution,” he said. “It affirms its continued role in mediation and support for efforts aimed at de-escalation and restoring full freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.”
Vessel attacked in Strait of Hormuz, UKMTO says
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre reported that a vessel was "struck by a suspected unknown projectile" on Monday evening in the Strait of Hormuz.
The attack caused a fire aboard the vessel, UKMTO said, which was extinguished with no casualties or environmental impact reported. The vessel, it added, was still underway.
IRGC spokesperson calls on US to 'leave the region'
In a Tuesday press conference, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson Gen. Hossein Mohebbi said the U.S. should admit defeat in its war with Iran and "leave the region."
President Donald Trump had told "big lies," Mohebbi alleged, as he called for the American administration to "be changed."
"The enemy knows that Iran is not after nuclear weapons," Mohebbi said, referring to the U.S. "Their issue with Iran is not its nuclear programme but rather its vastness, which they want to destroy."
Mohebbi also dismissed U.S. assertions that the volume of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz -- the strategic waterway off Iran's south coast which has become the focus of the conflict -- was being restored.
"The fact that the Americans might manage, at great expense, considerable trouble and high risk to sneak a small vessel through the Strait of Hormuz under cover of darkness to export, say, 100 or 200 barrels of oil does not mean the Strait is open," Mohebbi said.
Iran waiting for US response to 7-point proposal, Araghchi says
In comments published by Iranian state media on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed his meeting with Qatari mediators in New York following the United Nations General Assembly's high-level gathering last week.
"They had some ideas, and we agreed that they would raise the matter again with the American side, after which the U.S. side's final response would be conveyed to us," Araghchi said in a Monday briefing, as quoted by the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency.
Araghchi said Tehran submitted a seven-point proposal to the U.S. via Qatari mediators.
"Despite the comments made by the U.S. president, as I said, we are waiting for an official response from the United States through the mediators," Araghchi added.
Trump says he's offered Iran 'nothing' following reports of possible sanctions relief
President Donald Trump is rejecting reports that say he is open to offering Iran sanctions relief and releasing its frozen assets in exchange for progress toward a nuclear deal, posting on Monday that he's offered Iran "NOTHING."
Trump specifically responded to anAxios reportabout possible economic relief for Iran if they present concrete nuclear concessions, writing in a post on his social media platform that the story is “untrue,” and that they should "withdraw this fake story, IMMEDIATELY!"
Trump says US will win war 'one way or the other'
When asked about the progress of Monday’s mediated talks between the U.S. and Iran, President Donald Trump said, "We're going to win this as far as I'm concerned. It's going to be one way or the other. It's going to be -- it's going to go pretty quickly, too."
Trump continued to promise gas prices would come down after the war with Iran ends.
"We have the best economic numbers we have. Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. We're going to win that war very, very soon. It'll be over. And the gas prices will come tumbling down," Trump said.
Trump administration pushing to bring nuclear issue back into Iran talks: Officials
After President Donald Trump rejected a proposal from Iran over the weekend, U.S. officials said he remains open to offering the country sanctions relief and releasing its frozen assets in exchange for concrete progress toward a nuclear deal.
Trump confirmed U.S. and Iranian officials spoke via mediators on Monday.
The Trump administration has always said Iran would receive substantial financial rewards if it walked away from its nuclear program, and under June’s memorandum of understanding, the U.S. promised to roll back all sanctions as part of a verifiable, long-term nonproliferation deal. Iran has not indicated it’s willing to bring the nuclear issue into negotiations at this point.
8 Marines hurt in ship attack in Strait of Hormuz
Eight Marines were recently hurt in an Iranian attack on a ship operating in the Strait of Hormuz, though the injuries were not significant, a U.S. official confirmed to ABC News.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations tracked that a commercial vessel was struck by “an unknown projectile” on Sept. 14 and no injuries were reported at the time.
NBC News was first to report the previously undisclosed injuries to the Marines.
U.S. Central Command declined to comment on the report.
CENTCOM says Iran 'does not control' Strait of Hormuz
U.S. Central Command on Monday disputed a claim from an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander asserting that Tehran enjoys "full control over the Strait of Hormuz."
"This is FALSE," CENTCOM said in a post to X.
"Iran has no navy because American forces sank it. And Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz as evidenced by the thousands of ships that have passed through freely along with more than 1 billion barrels of oil just over the past few months," CENTCOM said.
Saudi foreign minister arrives in US for Rubio talks
Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrived in Washington early on Monday morning ahead of talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to the Saudi foreign ministry.
The two will "review bilateral relations and discuss regional and international developments," the ministry said in a statement.
Saudi Arabia is currently in an escalating conflict with the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen, as it supports the internationally recognized Yemeni government's military in its fight against the group.
Tehran 'fully prepared' for war to resume, Iranian FM says
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi asserted that Tehran is prepared to resume war with the U.S. and said it will stand firm "even if it comes to a doomsday war."
Asked whether diplomacy has failed, Araghchi told NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday that there is always hope but repeatedly cast doubts on the Trump administration's intentions.
"[T]here is always hope for diplomacy. But we have no reason, to be honest with you, we have no reason to come back to diplomacy and engage with this administration once again, because of their behavior in the past two years,"Araghchi said.
"We stand firm in the face of any aggression against us, even if it comes to a doomsday war," he said, adding "at the same time, we are ready for diplomacy."
"Now there is a very reasonable plan on the table. If they reject it for no reason, this is their fault," Araghchi said.
"We are ready for diplomacy. We are ready for war at the same time," he added.
Trump says he expects more talks with Iran this week, but is open to new strikes
President Donald Trump said that he expects more talks with Iran to occur this week as he continues to claim the country wants to make a deal to end the war, an agreement that has continued to elude the president.
"I expect more talks with Iran [this week]. They want to make a deal, but it is not the deal that I want to make. It is what we would have maybe agreed to a year ago. They overplayed their hand," Trumptold Axiosin a piece published Sunday.
Asked if he was considering new strikes against Iran, Trump responded: "I am always thinking about it."
The president also claimed that more than 20 million barrels of oil transited the Strait or Hormuz over the weekend, which he said was the largest since the start of the war.
"Last night, we took a record amount of oil out from the Hormuz Strait — more than we took out before the war,” Trump told reporters on the White House South Lawn earlier Sunday.
