The tour will include stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on a trip underscoring the deepening economic ties between the U.S. and the Gulf kingdoms.
Trump says jumbo jet is gift to Department of Defense
Further pressed by ABC News senior political correspondent Rachel Scott on what he would say to people who view the luxury plane as a personal gift to him, President Donald Trump said it was not a gift to him but to the Department of Defense.
He also referenced an anecdote involving the professional golfer Sam Snead.
"He had a motto, when they give you a putt, you say, thank you very much. You pick up your ball and you walk to the next hole," he said. "A lot of people are stupid. They say, no, no, I insist on putting it. And then they put it, they miss it, and their partner gets angry at them. You know what? Trump on jumbo jet gift: Would be 'stupid' to turn away free plane
Pressed on reports of a super luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet gift from the royal family of Qatar that isset to be announcedthis week, and if Qatar asked for anything in exchange, President Donald Trump called it a "very nice gesture."
"I think it's a great gesture from Qatar. Appreciate it very much. I would never be one to turn down that kind of an offer," he said. "I mean, I could be a stupid person and say, No, we don't want a free, very expensive airplane. But it was, I thought it was a great gesture."
"I think it was a gesture because of the fact that we help, have helped, and continue to, we will continue to all of those countries, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and others," he continued.
He said he doesn't plan to use the plane after he leaves office.
Trump says he might fly to Istanbul during Russia-Ukraine talks
During his visit to the Middle East this week, President Donald Trump said he might go to Istanbul, where direct talks between Russia and Ukraine are set to occur on Thursday.
"I think you may have a good result out of the Thursday meeting in Turkey between Russia and Ukraine, and I believe the two leaders were going to be there," Trump said. "I was thinking about flying over. I don't know where I'm going to be on Thursday. I've got so many meetings, but I was thinking about actually flying over there. There's a possibility of it."
His four-day tour of the Middle East includes stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
