MAJORITY APPROVE OF TRUMP IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY AND SAY IT'S 'NECESSARY' AS SUPPORT FOR PROCEEDINGS GROW: POLL

A majority of Americans approved of the Democratic-led House's recently-announced impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump and said it was a "necessary" move, according to a new survey.

A CBS News poll, released on Sunday morning, found that 55 percent of respondents approved of congressional Democrats starting an impeachment inquiry, with 35 percent saying they strongly approve and 20 percent said they somewhat approve. Meanwhile, 45 percent disapproved of the move, with 14 percent saying they somewhat disapprove and 31 percent said they strongly disapprove.

From what they've heard so far about Trump's handling of Ukraine-related matters, 41 percent believed the president acted illegally; 31 percent felt he acted improperly but lawfully; and 28 percent said he acted properly.

In addition, 55 percent of American adults believed the inquiry into Trump was necessary, while 45 percent said it was unnecessary. The survey interviewed 2,059 U.S. adults between September 26 and 27. The margin of error was 2.3 percentage points.

The weekend poll showed a rise in public support for impeachment proceedings as Trump faces increased scrutiny after a whistleblower filed a formal nine-page complaint—released on Thursday—that accused the White House of covering up a phone conversation made between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July, during which the U.S. president requested his foreign counterpart to probe former Vice President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden.

Early reports about the whistleblower's concerns ignited public outrage — and resulted in the complaint and a partial transcript of the call being released, as well as a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump, announced by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday. The summary of the conversation, made public by the White House on Wednesday, revealed that the president did ask Ukraine for assistance in investigating his political opponent and had even offered his own administration's Attorney General to help in the probe.

The last impeachment survey, an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll conducted by phone on Wednesday night and released on Thursday, showed that 49 percent of Americans approved of impeachment proceedings, while 49 percent disapproved and five percent said they were unsure. Despite the split, an overwhelming majority—three quarters—of respondents wanted the whistleblower to testify before Congress so the public could receive more information about the allegations against Trump.

Support for Trump's impeachment has yet to reach a majority. According to the CBS poll, 42 percent of respondents said the president deserves to be impeachment over the Ukraine scandal, while 36 percent said he doesn't deserve impeachment, and another 22 percent indicated that "it's too soon to say."
