The leader of an anti-nuclear weapons campaign that won the Nobel Peace Prize said President Donald Trump does not deserve the same recognition after the U.S. leader complained that he would receive the honor "if they gave it out fairly."
Trump believes he should win the Nobel Peace Prize for his administration's approach to North Korea, which initially brought closer the threat of nuclear war but has now resulted in ongoing talks about denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
In 2017, when Trump and North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un were exchanging threats of annihilation, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
The Nobel committee recognized ICAN's work in drawing attention to the "catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons."
"The Nobel Peace Prize is given for efforts to create peace, and Alfred Nobel was specifically thinking of disarmament," Beatrice Fihn, the executive director of ICAN who collected the award on behalf of the campaign told Newsweek.
"The Trump Administration has embarked on a new nuclear arms race, has torn up Cold War-era disarmament treaties, is spending $1.7 trillion on making his nuclear weapons more usable, and has threatened North Korea and Iran with nukes.
"Does that sound worthy of a peace prize? Of course not. If Trump really wants the Nobel he can sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons."
On Monday during a news conference with reporters from Pakistan, Trump was asked about the Nobel Peace Prize, The Hill reported, and one journalist suggested he would deserve it if he resolved the Kashmir issue.
"I think I'm gonna get a Nobel Prize for a lot of things, if they gave it out fairly, which they don't," Trump replied.
"They gave one to [former President] Obama immediately upon his ascent to the presidency, and he had no idea why he got it. And you know what? That was the only thing I agreed with him on."
Barack Obama won the peace prize in 2009 "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples" and his "vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons," The Nobel Prize said at the time.
Trump has been nominated for a peace prize by two right-wing Norweigan politicians.
"We have nominated him of course for the positive developments on the Korean Peninsula," Per-Willy Amundsen, a former justice minister in Norway who nominated Trump, told Reuters back in February.
"It has been a very difficult situation and the tensions have since lowered and a lot of it is due to Trump's unconventional diplomatic style."
President Trump's critics argue that his North Korea policy has achieved little of substance and rewarded the regime in Pyongyang with the international credibility it craves for not much in return.
The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize 2019 is due to be announced on October 11.
